1. Wear Your PPE Before Anything Else
Personal protective equipment is non-negotiable when handling liquid nitrogen:

- Long sleeves + closed-toe shoes — No exposed skin
- Lab coat or apron — Extra splash protection
2. Inspect the Dewar Before Use
Always check your Dewar before filling:
- Look for dents, cracks, or damage on the outer shell
- Check for frost or condensation on the outside — this may indicate vacuum loss
- Ensure the stopper/lid is not cracked or deformed
⚠️ Do not use a damaged Dewar. A compromised vacuum means rapid LN2 evaporation and potential pressure hazards.
3. Always Work in a Well-Ventilated Area
Liquid nitrogen evaporates rapidly into nitrogen gas, which displaces oxygen. In an enclosed space, this can cause oxygen deficiency and asphyxiation without warning.
- Always work in a room with good airflow or outdoors
- Never use or store Dewars in sealed rooms, closets, or vehicle trunks
- If working in a small lab, ensure active ventilation is running
4. Pre-Cool the Dewar Before First Fill
If your Dewar is brand new or has been empty for a long time, pre-cool it before filling:
- Pour a small amount of liquid nitrogen inside slowly
- Allow it to evaporate completely
- Repeat 2–3 times before filling to full capacity
- Wait 48 hours after the initial fill before use
Skipping this step can cause thermal shock and reduce the Dewar’s lifespan.
5. Filling the Dewar
- Use a cryogenic transfer hose or funnel — never use regular plastic tubing
- Fill slowly to minimize boiling and splashing
- Do not overfill — leave at least a few inches of space at the top
- Never seal the Dewar airtight during or after filling
⚠️ The stopper must always be loose-fitting to allow nitrogen gas to escape. Sealing it airtight can cause dangerous pressure buildup.
6. Dispensing Liquid Nitrogen
Due to the size and weight of Dewars — especially larger models — never attempt to lift and pour directly. Instead:
- Use a cryogenic transfer tube or withdrawal device inserted into the neck to draw out liquid nitrogen
- For small amounts, use a cryogenic ladle into a stainless steel or cryogenic-rated container
- Always dispense slowly and keep the container away from your body
- Never use glass or regular plastic containers to collect liquid nitrogen
7. Storing the Dewar
- Store upright on a stable, flat surface
- Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight
- Store only in well-ventilated areas
- Check liquid levels regularly — even sealed Dewars lose LN2 through natural evaporation (approx. 0.11–0.12 L/day)

8. After Use: Empty Dewar Storage
- Allow remaining liquid nitrogen to evaporate naturally in a ventilated area
- Leave the stopper loose when storing an empty Dewar to prevent moisture and ice buildup inside the neck
